Meet Jon Kreider
Beauty Below did not begin as a planned project. It grew naturally from a lifetime spent on and beneath the water. What started as curiosity evolved into a career, an adventure, and ultimately an archive spanning decades of underwater photography from around the world.
Every chapter, from commercial fishing in Southwest Florida to teaching diving throughout the Caribbean and beyond, captaining liveaboard dive vessels, years spent in the Maldives, and a career in commercial photography, has shaped the images and stories that now make up Beauty Below.
A life Below the Surface
Growing up in Southwest Florida, life on the water came naturally. After years in commercial fishing, an opportunity to begin a new chapter led me to Honduras in 2000. It was there that I discovered underwater photography and worked my way from staff photographer to divemaster and dive instructor.
That journey eventually led to the Cayman Islands, where I captained live aboard dive vessels while continuing to photograph the underwater world. Later, the Maldives became home for several years, providing extraordinary opportunities to dive, teach, photograph, and experience one of the world's most remarkable marine environments.
Returning to the United States in 2013 marked the beginning of a successful commercial photography career. Yet throughout every chapter, the underwater world remained a constant source of inspiration. Beauty Below brings those decades of experiences, photographs, and stories together for the first time.
The Quiet Art of Observing
The ocean has taught me that remarkable moments rarely happen on command. They belong to those willing to slow down, pay attention, and simply observe.
I've never believed that great underwater photography comes from chasing subjects. It comes from understanding them. The more time I spend beneath the surface, the more I appreciate that every creature has its own rhythm, its own behavior, and yes, its own personality. My role is not to interrupt that moment, but to recognize it when it unfolds.
The camera is simply the tool. Patience is the real craft.
If these photographs encourage someone to pause, look a little closer, or see the underwater world with a greater sense of wonder and respect, then they've done exactly what I hoped they would.
Publications & Recognition
Over the years, my photography has appeared in books, magazines, educational publications, and commercial projects, including work published by National Geographic. While those opportunities have been deeply rewarding, they have never been the destination. They have simply marked milestones along a much longer journey.
Beauty Below brings that journey together for the first time, drawing from decades of underwater photography to create a lasting collection of images, stories, and future publications.
Looking Ahead
Beauty Below represents more than a collection of photographs. It is the continuation of a journey that began decades ago and continues every time I enter the water.
My hope is that these images and stories encourage others to look beyond the surface, to appreciate the extraordinary diversity of life beneath the waves, and to recognize that some of the world's greatest wonders remain hidden just out of sight.
The adventure isn't over. If anything, it's just entering a new chapter.
